Pastor Notes – December

I said this last month but where has 2021 gone? I have a love/hate relationship with time. For example, our oldest daughter just got her drivers license and her first vehicle. And while I must admit I am excited to have another driver deliver to dance class and piano lessons, it does break my heart a bit that my kids are growing up! And while there are times that I wish they could live with us forever; I know that…

Pastor Notes – June

One of the common phrases that is used around our house is, “We don’t do that.” When our children act out or fight with each other, we let them know that “We don’t do that.” Part of the reason that the word “we” is used is so they will always know we are a tribe, a family community. And being a part of the Mearns Tribe means we will always be there for each other and there are certain…

Before March, 2020, I had never heard of Zoom but I wish I owned some stock in it! Over the past year, I think everyone has been on a Zoom meeting. Zoom has connected us in a way that we never have before. I have 2 weekly meetings via Zoom with people that I normally could not meet with; friends and pastors from out of state. While, during this pandemic, Zoom has served to be a valuable asset to keeping…

Wanting to Know Jesus!

I want to know Jesus! When I say know him, I don’t mean know what he did (rose from the dead, miracles, teachings, etc.) but I want to know who he was. Think of it this way, I can say I know Michael Jordan. He played 15 seasons in the NBA, won 6 NBA Championships, 5 MVP Regular Season awards, 14 time all-star and the greatest basketball player to ever live. But that is simply knowing what Michael Jordan did;…

This scripture has always amazed me. The people who are saying this were slaves in Egypt! God sends a man named Moses to free them. I have never been a slave but I would think freedom would be the most important thing to achieve! Yet, we find them plotting to overthrow Moses to go back to Egypt and become slaves again. This sounds crazy! It was Patrick Henry who said, “Give me liberty or give me death!” But as silly…

I hope that everyone has had a great beginning to their new year. I am so excited about what God has in store for Covenant Church in 2020!  We have already put one thing on our agenda for December 2020.   Last Sunday, we announced to everyone some very exciting news about our plans to build Bethlehem this Christmas and perform a production for our community.  We already have the dates set:  December 11th, 12th, 18th and 19th!  I know many…

Fall is here!  Everyone seems to love the Fall; whether it be football, wearing flannel, orange colors, pumpkin spice lattes, hot chocolate, the end of 100 degree days or scary movies, there seems to be something that gets everyone excited about this time of the year.  Kathryn Lively, who is a professor of Sociology at Dartmouth believes our love for Fall comes from our experiences as a child. “As children, we come to associate fall with going back to school,…

Over the past few months we have been going verse by verse through Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount.  At the end of this month we will wrap up this journey and begin a new one. One of the themes from the Sermon on the Mount is Jesus confronting us on the position of our heart.  He tells us, “Where your treasure is there your heart will be also.” “You cannot serve 2 masters.” The temptation in our world is that…

Food Mission Results

Last year, our Missions Team began investigating a fresh approach to serving food to our community.  We found a new partner in the Oklahoma Food Bank and with their help, we began our new food Pantry Program in August, 2018.  Many of you have helped serve and many have helped with donations and much needed prayers. We are a year into this program and I want to share some statistics that has been gathered by the Missions Team. Over the past year,…

A Good Story

I love a good story : whether it is a movie or a book.  One thing that seems to be a common theme through a good story, there always comes a point when it seems the good people are losing.  One of my favorite movies of all time is The Shawshank Redemption.  If I am channel surfing and I see it is playing, I always stop and finish watching it.  The story is about a man named Andy who is wrongfully…
